.NET on the Net May 8-15 : It’s full of stars

Saturday, May 17th, 2008

The release of Microsoft’s World Wide Telescope was easily the biggest thing out of Redmond this week. For those who haven’t seen it yet, it’s pretty amazing. Imagine Live Maps for space with lots of neat filters. The level of detail is pretty amazing and it’s interesting to see Microsoft’s take on something a little less business focused.
This week there …

.NET on the Net May 1-7: Popfly gets some new tools

Friday, May 9th, 2008

Microsoft has been quite busy trying to figure out what to do with the Yahoo situation, so there has been little in the way of news from Redmond. So, I’m taking this opportunity to point out some other recent Microsoft developments that might help you all out.
It seems that every developer I know, myself included, has some idea for the …

An ODD example of Data Portablity

Saturday, May 3rd, 2008

I recently became aware of a new initiative in the data portability arena - Open Data Definition (ODD). I applaud any effort to increase data portability between social networks and your data. But to really succeed the idea must be well thought out and research done to see what is out there and what really works.
Ben Werdmuller’s blog post introducing ODD defines it as a new format for import and export of data from social applications. He stresses that this project has risen from real world, not academic exercises. He makes a good argument for data portability; relating it the desktop taking a file created in …

.NET on the ‘Net April 24th-30th : Can we have that service pack back?

Thursday, May 1st, 2008

Well, today brought some interesting announcements about Expression, but that’s officially news for next week. Here’s what happened this past week. The one piece of news that will affect most of us is the delay of SP3 for Windows XP and the removal of Vista SP1 from automatic update. Since pretty much all of us ASP.NET developers are working on either …

Google Adsense Trialed on Yahoo!

Wednesday, April 9th, 2008

Yahoo! is currently running a two week trial of Google’s Adsense on 3% of its US search results. The trial is seen as an investigation into the prospects of a long term partnership between the two companies. The core idea, (according to Yahoo!) is to exploring strategic alternatives to maximize stockholder value, but is it really?
Or is this just game playing with Microsoft? Perhaps to boost perceived company value or to allude at the creation an advertising monopoly with Google. What ever the aim — Microsoft’s General Councel, Brad Smith has responded by posting this comment:
Any definitive agreement between Yahoo! and Google would consolidate over 90% of the search advertising market in …

Microsoft To Follow Apple’s Lead on Backwards Compatibility

Monday, April 7th, 2008

Via the SitePoint Industry News forum, Microsoft are planning on following Apple’s lead on backwards compatibility with the next version of their Windows operating system, referred to as Windows 7.
According to Dev Corvin:
Windows 7 takes a different approach to the componentization and backwards compatibility issues; in short, it doesn’t think about them at all. Windows 7 will be a from-the-ground-up packaging of the Windows codebase; partially source, but not binary compatible with previous versions of Windows.

Corvin suggests that this approach will not only allow for performance improvements to be made to Windows, by not having to support monolithic libraries for …

.NET on the ‘Net March 25 - April 1: OOXML and IE8

Wednesday, April 2nd, 2008

Sorry this update is a little late, to make up for it I added a day to the week. There are some very interesting stories from Microsoft this week. The biggest story is the adoption of OOXML as an ISO standard. While this isn’t directly web related, it’s been a pretty controversial topic and could have some wide reaching implications. With OOXML being adopted by both ISO and ECMA, it provides an open standard for MS Office Docs. Not surprisingly, IBM and a few others have …

With OOXML being adopted by both ISO and ECMA, it provides an open standard for MS Office Docs. Not surprisingly, IBM and a few others have some problems with the format, but this could be sign that Microsoft will work to publish more of their standards. I know that I would be happy to see some open standards related …
